Stillwater NWR NV

March 20, 2013 Wed
I’ve been staying in Fallon NV for the last week. During that time I have visited the Stillwater NWR several times and took one trip to the Carson Lakes Wetlands. You can learn about these important wildlife areas at http://www.fws.gov/stillwater/stillwater_refuge/stillwater.html and http://www.nevadaaudubon.org/birdingguide/birdingareas/carsonlake.html
March is not the best time of year in this area, but I hope to return during the winter months and/or during the spring migration at some point. There is a Birding Festival every spring. This years festival will be held at the Churchill Co Parks & Recreation Complex, Sheckler Rd at Hwy 95 in Fallon. You can learn about this festival and get a schedule of events at http://www.springwings.org/
Most of the ducks and geese that come by the thousands to this area have flown North and the spring migration is a few weeks away. There is always something to see year round, but a lot of the wetlands dry up in the summer months and due to this year’s lack of rain, a lot of the temporary wet areas were completely dry.

What a wonderful and important stop over for migrating water fowl and small birds
